ABOUT THIS PAINTING

A set of three miniature watercolour studies illustrating changing weather conditions over the course of 24 hours.

The opening piece presents a view of the sky as a weather front approaches. Layers of warmly lit, broken cloud and streaks of sunlight evoke a mild atmosphere.

Hours later, in the intermediate study, heavy rain-bearing clouds race across a hilly horizon as the cold front advances.

Finally, the third sketch captures the morning after, viewed at ground level. The cold front has cleared and arctic air has settled in revealing a frosty landscape with wintry showers.

The studies are loose and minimalist, created using a wet-on-wet technique that allows the paint to flow and form naturally. Some pieces required multiple attempts to achieve the desired effect—hence the term 'studies'.

The dark frame and mount are included and provide a striking contrast to the sunlight around the cloud formations.
