ABOUT THIS PAINTING
The term wave breaking in oceanography refers to the process when a wave becomes too steep and collapses, usually forming white foam. This occurs when the wave’s crest moves faster than its base, often near the shore or during stormy conditions.
In this study, I focus on capturing the energy of the crest’s forward motion. The direction of the wave is ambiguous—it appears to move from left to right, but it could have also collided with another crest at an angle, resulting in a breaker. The vertical spray suggests a sudden impact, conveying the ocean’s raw energy frozen in time.
The painting is elegantly showcased with an off-white border, set within a solid wood frame finished dark walnut.
The online images may not fully capture the vivid colour palette and depth of this artwork due to colour compression and the limitations of screens. Colours that are often underrepresented on digital images include hues ranging from turquoise to deep blue.
