ABOUT THIS PAINTING
This experimental piece, “Surf”, invites open interpretation through its textured surface and abstract brushwork. To some viewers, the sweeping patterns might evoke the motion of breaking waves and turbulent surf, while the earthy tones could suggest sediment stirred by the churning waters of a stormy shoreline.
The textured patterns were achieved using salt, with some crystals remaining firmly intact thanks to the binder in the watercolours (gum Arabic). Salt was intentionally used in this study to capture the essence of a storm, where crashing waves often fill the air with a salty mist you can taste.
The delicate colour palette and texture made this piece particularly challenging to photograph, as the images struggle to capture its true depth.
Elegantly showcased with a grey border, the painting is set within a solid wood frame finished in a rich walnut stain that complements the brown tones in the abstraction.
