ABOUT THIS PAINTING

This semi-abstract watercolour is open to interpretation, but aims to depict a harsh Icelandic landscape.

Gently rolling hills are dusted with snow, shaped into streaking patterns by the prevailing summit winds. The Icelandic word skafkafald is a poetic term that describes drifting snow, translating to ‘scraped heap’ or ‘wind-scraped snowdrift.’

Above, dark, layered mid-level clouds (altostratus) suggest a low sun struggling to penetrate the thick cover. Diffuse light faintly filters through in a few areas, with broad daylight breaking through in the top right corner of the composition.

Created alongside “Lava Fields” (WE058), it shares a similar colour palette.

Themes representing the natural elements often feature in my artwork, particularly in abstract pieces that incorporate volcanic rock and pumice. My textures delve into the intricate geology of ocean floors and the inhospitable landscapes of Arctic regions.

The painting is presented with a white border and enclosed in a walnut-finish frame which complements the cool tones of the artwork.
