ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Art studies are typically smaller and less detailed, often serving as sketches to explore composition, colour or technique.
These two sketches work best as a pair, with their cool and warm palettes complementing each other. The deep blues in Study A evoke the height of the gale, with dark clouds looming overhead, while Study B introduces warmer hues of sienna and gold, reflecting the return of daylight.
Using wax is a well-known technique for preserving negative space or highlights in watercolour painting. Here, it was used to depict breaking waves—a somewhat tricky process requiring precision with an invisible medium on a white canvas. Once the wax work was complete, layers of paint were applied, adding depth and movement to the scenes.
The paintings are elegantly showcased with off-white borders, set within solid wood frames finished in a rich walnut stain.
