ABOUT THIS PAINTING
This watercolour captures a classic London street scene with a sudden shower. The painting conveys movement and the transient nature of light and weather. The focal point of the composition is the iconic London Underground sign and people with umbrellas going about their day regardless of the rain; a typical scene in Britain!
The painting was inspired by a spontaneous photograph taken with an iPhone in late December 2019, just before Christmas. I was fascinated with the contrast between the moody cityscape, dark silhouettes, shadows and the dazzling sunlight. Certain aspects of the original scene have been artistically modified in the painting to enhance the overall impact of the composition (e.g. the London Underground sign is larger and darker than in the original photo which creates more contrast between the white paper and dark paint.
