ABOUT THIS PAINTING

A set of two small watercolour studies illustrating storm clouds, painted with a subtle monochromatic palette in Payne’s Grey (a blend of grey and blue pigments), ideal for creating a moody atmosphere.

Study A depicts a storm cloud, possibly parallel storm cells adjacent to one another. Sunlight pierces through the gap, illuminating rain or hail beginning to fall from one of the cloud’s base. In the distance, mountainous terrain adds subtle depth to the composition.

Study B presents a similar storm cloud formation over the sea. Sunlight glistens on the choppy water below, where rain has already reached the surface.

Two canvases, two storm clouds—one over land, the other over water.

The studies are loose and expressive, with visible brushstrokes, and required multiple attempts to achieve the precise effects necessary to depict specific weather formations.

Close-up photography has been taken under optimal lighting to provide the best possible representation of the artwork online.
