ABOUT THIS PAINTING

This watercolour study portrays a dramatic sky dominated by diffused “rain shafts” descending from turbulent, wintry clouds. The formations suggest cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds, hinting at frequent, blustery showers, possibly accompanied by hail.

Bright streaks of sky break through the layers of grey, while the horizon below is cloaked in darkness ahead of the approaching clouds with trees partially consumed by the downpour.

The lowest part of the painting hints at sodden ground, with standing water reflecting skylight.

This piece was created to experiment with minimalist atmospheric techniques in a monochrome palette. A chunky black frame and crisp ice-white mount perfectly complement the bold and striking coldness of the study.
