ABOUT THIS PAINTING
This watercolour blends realistic and semi-abstract elements creating a mysterious atmosphere and leaving room for interpretation. Shades of blue and grey depict a misty mountain range, with soft, diffused light breaking through rugged clouds above. It could represent a peaceful dawn, the clearing of a storm, or something more otherworldly.
The title “Payne’s Grey Range” carries a layered meaning. It is inspired by the rich blue-grey pigment named after 18th-century English painter William Payne, while also reflecting the use of the pigment's full tonal spectrum (or range)— from delicate light washes to deep, dramatic shadows. Furthermore, the title references the mountain range and the varying weather, from mist to clouds.
The painting is displayed with a white border and set in a custom-made solid wood frame finished in blue-grey which complements the artwork’s colour palette.
