Cumulus Mediocris is a medium size cumulus cloud. Generally, a cumulus of this size does not produce precipitation. In this painting, however, a phenomenon called “virga” is visible at the base of the cloud. It is a shaft of light rain which is quickly evaporating into dry air directly beneath the cloud. Virga is fairly common and accompanies many other species of cloud.

The sky (acrylic) has been painted with coarse bristles to give a subtle, abstract effect.
