ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Inspiration
Most of my abstractions are inspired by the vast turquoise waters of tropical seas and my fascination with the geology of undersea terrains. However, this particular piece hints at something more organic as well…
The layering and intricate patterns may, to another viewer, suggest something on a microscopic scale—perhaps as small as plankton or even a single cell with the circular form resembling a nucleus. A unique prominence to its side also adds a playful touch—almost like a pimple begging to be popped!
Importantly, the layering technique of translucent paints allows the artwork to change its appearance dramatically depending on the ambient light. In dim, artificial lighting, it may appear flat and subdued. In contrast, natural daylight brings the surface to life, revealing bright, almost luminescent aquas and greens. This effect feels like an awakening. I like to think of it as my painting’s own version of chlorophyll.
Back on the macroscale, the high-gloss circular form of watery turquoise can also evoke the image of a submerged atoll surrounded by coral reefs, a recurring theme in many of my previous textured artworks.
Regardless of the perspective, water remains the ultimate inspiration for this abstract work—the medium of life itself.
This striking painting, measuring 96 x 66 cm, was created on canvas using layered volcanic rock, sand, and other materials, combined with binding agents and translucent paints.
Colour and light
I highly recommend displaying this on a well-lit, neutral wall with ambient natural daylight to ensure the best viewing experience and avoid disappointment.
Please note that online images may not fully capture the vivid colour palette and depth of this artwork due to colour compression and screen limitations.
Colours that are often underrepresented in digital images include the rich hues ranging from turquoise to deep blue.
Gallery photos have been taken under different lighting conditions to provide a balanced representation of the painting’s relative colours.
